ELOPEMENT CEREMONY FAQ’S

What are our Ceremony Options?

You can have a Symbolic or Legal Marriage in Ireland.

What’s the difference?

Symbolic ceremonies are not legal.
Legal ceremonies are.

How does a Symbolic Ceremony work?

Some couples do the legal part in the US to bypass the legalities and have a symbolic ceremony in Ireland.

This means you don’t have to worry one bit about it on your trip. There are no forms or meetings to attend.

We then create a symbolic ceremony with you that we perform on your elopement date. It opens up so many more beautiful locations as you can pretty much do this anywhere on public lands.

A good tip is to have one of your friends in the US to file your paperwork on the same day you elope in Ireland!

How does a Legal Ceremony work?

If you decide to legally marry in Ireland you will have to contact the HSE offices. I can direct you on that.
Then they will send you an application form.
You then have to fill the paperwork and provide all the documentation requested.
If you have been married before you must provide all the paperwork from your divorce, which is then sent to the offices in Roscommon where the legal clerks review it.
Once authorized, you can make a date for an appointment with the HSE office.
This needs to be 5 days before your ceremony. You need to be in Ireland 5 days before the date of your ceremony.
There is a fee of €200 for this process paid directly to the HSE.

You now have your MRF form or the green folder.

This needs to be brought with you and signed by the registered solemniser, which is me! I can perform legal ceremonies in Ireland.

You must have 2 witnesses who are over 18 years of age to become legally married.

There are certain criteria about where you can have a legal ceremony. They need to be held in a building that’s open to the public and has wheelchair access. For example a hotel.

Can we do Both?

Yes, you can sign the documents(MRF) in the civil offices with the HSE registrar and 2 witnesses and then have a symbolic ceremony wherever you choose.

Or we can sign the MRF in a hotel and move the rest of the ceremony outdoors to your preferred location.

This allows you to legally marry in Ireland and have the freedom to have your symbolic ceremony wherever you choose.

How do we create the Ceremony together?

We create your custom ceremony with you. I use a template ceremony on google drive which I share with you coming closer to the date.

It is easy to update and edit the template and share it back and over. As it is online you always have access to the latest version.

This is to give you ideas and a format for the ceremony. Then you can add or remove whatever poetry or songs you love. You can chose to have a Celtic handfasting ritual included. Or include any rituals that are important to you.

What time of Day should we have our Ceremony at?

We recommend that you have your ceremony approximately 3 hours before sunset. This can be late is the day during mid summer so it’s completely up to you. We recommend this time as the light is best for photo and video.

IRELAND

What is the Best Time of Year to Elope to Ireland?

The best time to visit Ireland is between March and May, and September to November, when it’s not as crowded as it is in summer, or as cold as it is in winter. That said, Ireland has a mild, temperate climate and although it’s rainy at times, you can visit all year round.

In Ireland, on the shortest day (December 21st), the sun rises at about 8:40 a.m. and sets at about 4:10 p.m. providing approximately seven-and-a-half hours of daylight. The longest day (June 21st), the sun rises at about 5:00 a.m. and sets at about 10:00 p.m. providing approximately seventeen hours of daylight.

What is the Weather like in Ireland?

Ireland has a mild, temperate climate and although it’s rainy at times, you can visit all year round.

The weather is better during the summer months but this is also high tourist season. It is changeable. Coming in summer does not guarantee no rain and sometimes in winter the weather is bright and sunny. It’s very hard to predict.

Some couples prefer the moody skies of the autumn/winter. Others want to enjoy the long summer days and the warmer weather.

It’s important to know that your photos will be amazing no matter what weather you get.

What type of Accommodation should we get for our Elopement Day?

Any accommodation that you want is perfect.

If you want our advice we recommend an AIR BNB in the area close by where you plan to have your ceremony. This way you have complete privacy getting ready. Also there are some gorgeous traditional Irish cottages available on AIRBNB that some couple’s prefer. They add that Irish feel and look to the morning preparation images and film.
